Exploring Vacuums!

Get ready to use a simple flame to create negative air pressure, otherwise known as a vacuum.

You’ll then use this vacuum to pull a hard boiled egg inside

of a bottle!

Vacuum an Egg into a Bottle!

Materials

  • Hard Boiled and Peeled Egg (I suggest having a few on hand)

  • Jar with top slightly narrower than the egg but wider than half the egg

  • Candle

  • A Lighter and someone who can use it safely

Procedure

  1. Boil your eggs if you haven’t already or this is going to get really messy really fast.

  2. Insert a candle into the end of the egg withouth breaking the rest of the egg apart.

  3. Carefully, light the candle or have someone help so you don’t burn yourself.

  4. Turn your bottle upside down and lower it slowly over the egg. Allow the flame of the candle to consume some of the oxygen in the bottle before sealing the opening.

  5. Lower the bottle onto the egg, sealing the opening.

  6. Watch the vacuum you created pull the egg inside the bottle!

This experiment is great for Beginner Explorers

and uses household items. A flame is required

and supervision is advised.
