Exploring Energy!

By building a pattern of popsicle sticks, we can explore the forces of tension, compression, and watch as energy moves like a wave through a system converting potential energy into kinetic motion!

Building the
Popsicle Stick Chain Reaction!

Materials

  • Jumbo Popsicle or Craft Sticks

  • Some Patience

Procedure

  1. Download the PDF Worksheet for this experiment to see a series of photos that will help you build your chain reaction. Following the guide, you can make your reaction as big or as little as you want, repeating it until you run out of space or popsicle sticks!

  2. Remember to keep pressure on the final stick you add or the reaction might happen before you're ready. If it does, don't worry, just be patient and start again.

  3. After you've built the pattern, let go of the final stick and watch the reaction!

This experiment is great for Beginner Explorers

and uses household items.
