Magnetic Slime!

This slime appears to have a mind of its own once you introduce a magnetic field. You can make it crawl across a table or pull in rare earth magnets!

We had amazing fun playing with this slime and you can too by following the steps below.

Pro Tip:

Mixing and making slime
in a
ziploc bag helps contain the mess
and doubles as storage!

Making Magnetic Slime!

Materials

  • 1 cup white school glue

  • ½ water

  • 2 tablespoons contact solution
(must contain boric acid, also known as sodium borate)

  • 1 tablespoon baking soda

  • 1 tablespoon iron filings

  • 1 tablespoon iron powder

  • Measuring spoons and cups

  • Large ziploc bag

  • Rare earth magnets for play

Procedure

  1. Pour glue and water into ziploc bag, mix well.

  2. Add contact lens solution.

  3. Add baking soda and combine until mixture stops sticking to the bag. If your slime is still too liquid, add more baking soda, a little at a time.

  4. Pour in iron filings and iron powder. Knead mixture in bag until fillings and powder are evenly distributed and mixture becomes more firm.

  5. Now have fun playing with magnetic slime and neodymium magnets!

This experiment is great for beginner or intermediate explorers, uses some household ingredients, will need other ingredients to be specially ordered, and can be messy.
