Landfill Experiment!

With over 7 billion people on Earth, we need to help conserve and protect our environment.

 

This experiment demonstrates the harmful effects of not composting organic waste properly!

Methane Gas Landfill Experiment!

Materials

  • 4 plastic or glass bottles. Using what you already have in your recycle bin is a great way to help sustain the planet.

  • 3 different types of Fruit or Vegetable scraps. We have raspberries, bananas, and onions.

  • 4 balloons

  • Tape

  • Water

  • Time

Procedure

  1. Mash up fruit and/or vegetables.
     

  2. Place fruit and/or vegetables in 3 of the 4 bottles.
     

  3. Fill the 4th bottle with water to 3/4 full.
     

  4. Cover the fruit and vegetables with water to 3/4 full.
     

  5. Place the balloon over the tops of bottles.
     

  6. Tape balloons in place.
     

  7. Leave the bottles in a warm place and observe as the food breaks down and creates methane gas, collected by the balloons!

THIS EXPERIMENT IS GREAT FOR BEGINNER EXPLORERS,

USES HOUSEHOLD ITEMS, AND MIGHT REQUIRE ADULT

SUPERVISION. THIS EXPERIMENT WILL REQUIRE DAYS

BEFORE RESULTS SHOW.
