Fire Extinguisher!

Discover the invisible power of carbon dioxide in this fun and fiery experiment! Learn how to extinguish candles using a chemical reaction between baking soda and vinegar.

Carbon Dioxide Fire Extinguisher!

Materials

  • Small candles

  • Matches or Lighter and someone who can use them safely

  • Clear jar or pitcher

  • Baking soda

  • Vinegar

  • Spoon

Procedure

  1. Light the candles and place them on a flat surface.
     

  2. Add 2 tablespoons of baking soda to the jar or pitcher. Slowly pour in 1/4 cup of vinegar to create carbon dioxide gas. Gently mix with the spoon if needed.
     

  3. Gently tip the jar over the candle without spilling liquid to snuff out the flame!

This experiment is great for Beginner Explorers

and uses household items. Supervision or

someone who can safely operate a lighter is required.
